# Recipient Groups

## Recipient groups allow you to pre-select conversations so that you can quickly configure a message of any type for delivery.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Conversations** include:

* Direct messages with other users
* Multi-person direct messages (group messages)
* Private channels
* Public channels
  {% endhint %}

### To create a recipient group:

* Head to the **Nightowl** app home – make sure you are on the `Home` tab.
* Navigate to the `Recipient Groups` section and click :busts\_in\_silhouette:`New` button.
* Choose to either [**select conversations**](#select-conversations) or [**enter a list of IDs**](#list-of-ids).

#### Select conversations

* Provide a name for the recipient group.

  > Optional
* Enter one or more conversations to BCC.

  > When more than one conversation is selected, **semicolons** will be used as delimiters to display the recipients after the message is created.
  >
  > E.g. a message to **separately selected** DM recipients @Jack, @Jill, and @Jen will show as`BCC: @Jack; @Jill; @Jen` whereas selecting a **group** DM between you, @Jack, and @Jill in addition to a separately selected DM with @Jen will appear as `BCC: @Jack, @Jill; @Jen`.
* To [**convert the conversations**](#convert-conversations-to-distinct-users) to distinct users, check the box.

  > Optional
* Click `Create` to save the recipient group.

#### List of IDs

* Provide a name for the recipient group.

  > Optional
* Enter Slack channel and/or user IDs in the text input.

  > Use commas or new lines as delimiters

{% hint style="info" %}
Use the :heavy\_plus\_sign:`Add more` button to open additional text inputs as needed.
{% endhint %}

* Click `Create` to save the recipient group.

### After creating a recipient group, it can be shared, modified, deleted, or used to create a message of any type.

* Click :bomb:`Delete` to remove the recipient group.
* Click :candy: `Share` to offer other users the ability to add a **copy** of the recipient group to their own Nightowl app home.

{% hint style="info" %}
When a recipient group is shared, regardless of whether it is **static** or **dynamic**, a copy is offered to the user(s) you share it with that reflects the group's current state.

> Any subsequent modifications you make to your recipient group will not propagate to shared copies belonging to other users. Similarly, changes that another user makes to their own copy of the group you shared with them will only affect their copy.
> {% endhint %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
If your recipient group includes private channels, make sure anyone you share it with is already a member.
{% endhint %}

* The following actions are available in the overflow (`...`) menu:
  * :pen\_fountain:`Edit`

    * Edit the conversations in the recipient group

  * :mailbox\_with\_mail:`Send message`
    * Send a [**BCC message**](https://happybara.gitbook.io/nightowl/reference/bcc-messages) to the recipients and optionally delete the recipient group

    * Create a [**scheduled message**](https://happybara.gitbook.io/nightowl/reference/scheduled-messages) to the recipients and optionally delete the recipient group

      > The recipient(s) can be edited

  * :gear:`Set recurring message`
    * Configure a [**recurring message**](https://happybara.gitbook.io/nightowl/reference/recurring-messages) to the recipients and optionally delete the recipient group

      > The recipient(s) can be edited

  *  :page\_with\_curl:`Compose draft`
    * Save [**draft message**](https://happybara.gitbook.io/nightowl/reference/draft-messages) to the recipients and optionally delete the recipient group

      > The recipient(s) can be edited

{% hint style="info" %}
All Nightowl messages are sent from your user.

Recipients will **not** be able to tell that you did not send the message.
{% endhint %}

### Convert conversations to distinct users

Selecting many individual users can be tedious. Use the optional checkbox to create a recipient group from the distinct users present across the selected conversations. This will build a group from the unique members of any public or private channels, multi-person direct messages, and/or direct messages.
